How do you get to the Kaneohe sandbar?

Can you walk to the Kaneohe sandbar?
No. The sandbar is approximately 1 mile offshore in the middle of Kaneohe Bay. You need a boat to get there.
Can you visit the sandbar without a tour?
Technically yes, if you have your own boat or kayak. However, a guided tour is strongly recommended. Tour operators have permits, know the safest areas, provide all equipment, and take you to the best snorkeling spots.
How far is the sandbar from Waikiki?
Heeia Kea Boat Harbor is approximately 45 minutes from Waikiki by car. Captain Bob’s and Captain Bruce offer free round-trip Waikiki hotel pickup.
Is there parking at the departure point?

How long is the boat ride?
The boat ride from Heeia Kea Boat Harbor to the sandbar is approximately 10 to 15 minutes. It is a short, scenic ride across the calm bay.

Can you walk on the sandbar?

How deep is the water?
Low tide: ankle to knee deep (6 inches to 2 feet) on the sandbar. High tide: waist to chest deep (3 to 5 feet). Surrounding bay: 10 to 30 feet.
What is Ahu O Laka?

Yes. Scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) were filmed at the Kaneohe sandbar.
Is the sandbar visible at high tide?
Not really. At high tide, the sandbar is submerged. You can still enjoy swimming, floating, and water sports, but you cannot walk on exposed sand.
Tours and Booking
How much does a sandbar tour cost?
$121 to $189 per adult depending on the operator. KBOS starts at $121.47/adult, Captain Bruce at $125/adult, and Captain Bob’s at $189/adult. Children receive discounted rates. Compare all tour prices →
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes, we strongly recommend booking at least a few days ahead, especially for morning tours and during summer (May to September). Tours can sell out on weekends.
What if it rains?
Tours operate rain or shine. Brief rain showers are normal on the windward side and typically pass quickly. Tours are only cancelled in severe weather or very high winds.
Is food included?
Captain Bob’s includes a full BBQ hamburger lunch. KBOS includes lunch on afternoon tours only. Captain Bruce provides light snacks. See our full food and drink guide →
Can I bring my own food and drinks?
Captain Bruce is BYOB-friendly (canned drinks only). KBOS allows BYOB with a $20 corkage fee. Captain Bob’s does not allow outside drinks. See BYOB policies →
Which tour is best for beginners?
All three tours are beginner-friendly. For snorkeling beginners, Captain Bruce offers guided instruction. For families wanting the easiest experience, Captain Bob’s (with lunch and free pickup) is the simplest choice.
Activities and Safety
Do I need to know how to swim?
Not for the sandbar portion. You can stand in shallow water at low tide. For snorkeling, basic swimming helps, but all tours provide life jackets.
Can I see sea turtles?
Yes, Hawaiian green sea turtles are commonly spotted during the snorkeling portion. Remember to stay at least 10 feet away. They are protected by law. Read our snorkeling guide →
Are there sharks?
Encounters are extremely rare. The shallow, enclosed bay is not typical shark territory. No shark incidents in over 30 years of tour operations.
Are the tours wheelchair accessible?
The boats are generally not wheelchair accessible. Boarding requires stepping onto the boat. Contact the tour operator directly to discuss specific needs.
Are there bathrooms on the boat?
Captain Bob’s, Captain Bruce, and the KBOS Action Club catamaran all have onboard restrooms. Smaller private charter boats may not.
Can I fly a drone?
Drone use is restricted near the sandbar due to proximity to Marine Corps Base Hawaii. Your tour operator will ask you to keep drones stowed.
Is there phone service?
Generally yes. Most major carriers have coverage at the sandbar. Signal can be spotty, so bring a waterproof phone case.
