Low Tide vs High Tide
Timing your visit to the Kaneohe sandbar can make a big difference in your experience. The sandbar changes dramatically depending on the tide.
🌊 At Low Tide
- The sandbar emerges from the water, creating a white sand beach in the middle of the bay
- You can walk and stand on the sandbar with water ankle to knee deep
- Best for wading, playing volleyball, photos, and relaxing
- The most iconic experience. This is what you see in all the photos
Best for: First-time visitors, photographers, families with young kids
🏊 At High Tide
- The sandbar is submerged under 3 to 5 feet of water
- The area becomes a waist-to-chest-deep aquatic playground
- Better for swimming, floating, and water sports (SUP, kayak)
- Snorkeling conditions are often better with more water movement
Best for: Snorkelers, swimmers, water sports enthusiasts
Most first-time visitors prefer low tide because walking on a sandbar in the middle of the ocean is a truly unique experience. However, high tide is great for water activities. Tour operators schedule trips around both conditions.
King tides (extra-low tides near full and new moons) create the most dramatic sandbar exposures, especially from May through July. A tide level below 0.5 feet means the sandbar will be well exposed.

Best Time of Day
☀️ Morning Tours (Recommended)
- Calmest winds: Trade winds typically pick up in the afternoon
- Smoothest water: Better for snorkeling visibility
- Less crowded: Fewer boats at the sandbar
- Best lighting for photos with the Koʻolau Mountains
🌅 Afternoon Tours
- Winds can be stronger, making the water choppier
- Still enjoyable, especially if you prefer warmer temperatures
- Some tours include lunch on afternoon departures
- Sunset light can be beautiful later in the day

Best Months to Visit
Kaneohe Bay sandbar tours operate year-round, Monday through Saturday. That said, conditions vary by season.
🌞 May through September (Best)
- Calmest ocean conditions with minimal wind swells
- Warmest water temperatures (78–82°F)
- Least rainfall on the windward side
- Longest daylight hours
- This is peak season, so book 1 to 2 weeks in advance
🌧️ October through April
- Occasional winter swells can make the bay slightly rougher
- More frequent rain showers (often brief)
- Water temperatures still warm (74–78°F)
- Fewer crowds and easier booking
- Whale watching season (December to March). You may spot humpback whales from the boat
Weather Tips
Kaneohe is on Oahu’s windward (east) side, which gets more rainfall than Waikiki. However, don’t let that stop you:
- Rain showers are usually brief and pass quickly
- Tours operate rain or shine. The water is warm regardless
- Overcast days can actually be better for snorkeling (less glare)
- Tours are only cancelled for severe weather or very high winds

Book Your Sandbar Tour
Morning tours sell out faster, especially during summer. We recommend booking at least a few days in advance.
